Denise Farleigh

Denise Farleigh was born and raised in Oklahoma in a tiny town named Crescent.  She spent her childhood years covered in printer's ink, helping publish her family owned weekly newspaper, the Logan County News.  Setting type, operating a linotype and a hand fed printing press from the age of nine had at least something to do with her decision to apply to medical school!

She obtained her undergraduate degree from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, 1971, as a physiology major.  She attended medical school at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in Oklahoma City, 1975 and internship and residency at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in diagnostic radiology.  Her board certifiication is from the American Board of Radiology.

Dr. Farleigh came to Alaska in 1979, and joined ARA with Dr. Maury Coyle, Dr. John Kottra, and Dr. Jan Anderson.  At that time, the hospital and department were much smaller. The PIC came along in 1986, and there have been numerous expansions of hospital and imaging center since that time.

Her special interests include women's imaging, particularly breast.  Prior to opening the PIC, about 8 mammograms per day was average.  Currently, the average of mammograms at the PIC is 100-125, including mobile mammography.  The then PPB and ARA (especially Dr. Maury Coyle) brought mammography to Alaska, and since then ARA has pioneered other breast services as well.  ARA began percutaneous breast biopsies using stereotactic guidance in 1991.

Dr. Denise Farleigh has been a former President of the Medical Staff, and is the current Chair of Radiology.  Some of the oranizations of which she is a member include ACR, RSNA, Roentgen Ray, American Women in Radiology, Society of Breast Imaging, and AMA.

Denise is married to Randy Farleigh and has a son, Nathan Cook.  She loves sailing, scuba diving, and travel to almost anywhere.
